Matthias Storme is Professor of Law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the Universiteit Antwerpen. He obtained his Lic. iuris (1981) and Dr. iuris (1989) at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and an M.A. in Philosophy at Yale University (1982). He also studied at the Universita di Bologna and the Max-Planck-Institut für internationales und ausländisches Privatrecht in Hamburg. He lectures mainly on International business law, Belgian, European and Comparative law of contract, property and civil procedure, and comparative philosophy of state & religion.
He was a guest lecturer in many law schools abroad and a guest professor in Beijing. He is editor in chief of the European Review of Private Law and editor of the Tijdschrift voor Privaatrecht. He was a member of the Lando Commission (since 1992), the Study Group on a European Civil Code and the Acquis Group (since 2003) and of the Compilation & Redaction Team for the Draft Common Frame of Reference for European Contract Law. He is secretary of the Association for a European Law Institute (ELIA, founded 2010). His publications are mainly in the field of Belgian, European and comparative property law, law of obligations and civil procedure, of constitutional law, of legal history and of legal and political philosophy. He is also a practicing member of the Brussels Bar.
