To better equip our students with skills of legal research, with the support of CUPL library, CESL invited consultants from LexisNexis and Westlaw to give lectures on these two worldwide used databases. The lectures were held on September 16th, 2015, in Room 305, Mingfa Building, Changping Campus. New 2015 intakes of CESL passionately came to the room early in the morning, waiting to be trained in their first lecture courses of their new school. Students from other faculties also showed their interest by taking part in the lectures and discussions.
Ms. Anita Yue, LexisNexis application consultant, started her demonstration with a brief introduction of LexisNexis. She then led the attendance to Lexis.com by showing them a full view of the page and introducing some basic legal resources as well as ways of approaching the content of the database. Some useful techniques for legal resources application were also provided.
After a short break of Ms. Anita Yue’s lecture, we welcomed our Westlaw presenter, Ms. Qiong Jia. Intellectual property was given as example in processes of some researches. West Key Number System, which is West's master classification system of U.S. law, was also introduced as most legal documents on Westlaw are indexed to this system.
The lecture ended in a warm discussion. Some students said it’s very helpful and they would make the most of legal resources in their future study and work.
