The European Commission President José Manuel Durão BARROSO led the EU delegation to the Xueyuanlu campus of China University of Political Science and Law on the morning of November 21st friendly received by HUANG Jin, CUPL President, ZHANG Fusen, Chinese Co-Chair of the CESL Joint Managerial Committee (JMC) and the former Minister of Justice, as well as ZHU Yong, Vice President of CUPL. During his visit, President BARROSO had an informal talk with CUPL and CESL student and faculty representatives.
HUANG Jin warmly welcomed President BARROSO for the second time within 5 years and remained that President BARROSO inaugurated China-EU School of Law (CESL) and gave a speech in the opening ceremony on October 23rd 2008. After the last 5 years’ development, CESL, aiming at double-master education, is becoming an excellent and reliable platform in China-EU legal exchange and education. CESL has held professional trainings for judges, procurators, lawyers, civil servants and other legal professionals while promoting legal researches. The primary success of CESL attributes to 3 aspects: the solid cooperation between University of Hamburg and CUPL; the active participation of 16 partner universities; the great support from both Chinese government and EU. Even though there were inevitably some problems, we believe that CESL could further its steady progress with the joint effort from both sides.
President BARROSO was pleased to see the success CESL has achieved so far. He fully affirmed the benefit CESL reaped in the last 5 years, in particular, the important position in legal education and China-EU legal profession CESL has won. President BARROSO said CESL was experiencing an important period of its growth – the “childhood” comparing to its “infancy” 5 years ago, and he hoped CESL could become the “pillar of the legal society” in the future under the support from both China and EU.
ZHANG Fusen said he hoped and had faith that China and EU will continuously support the development of CESL and delivered his best wishes to CESL.
At the end of the meeting, HUANG Jin gifted President BARROSO an autograph album with all the signatures of CESL student representatives in it as a souvenir.
Later on, President BARROSO held an informal talk with the student representatives, who were coming from CESL, Institute for Human Rights, Law School, School of Civil, Commercial and Economic Laws, School of International Law, College of International Studies.
